Los Angeles-based artist DJ Stussy has been building toward a music career since before he could really remember choosing one. He started playing drums at three, was performing professionally by six, and was holding down two church services a Sunday by age eight. By ten he'd taught himself piano, and by fifteen he was experimenting with production. That foundation led to his first released song, "Highschool," at seventeen, and eventually a full-time pivot to music after college. A singer, rapper, songwriter, and self-described creative storyteller, DJ Stussy (he/him) blends hip-hop with social commentary, drawing on his South Central upbringing and gospel background to explore identity, culture, and resilience. He points to Chance The Rapper and Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest as his biggest musical inspirations, citing their lyrical comprehension and stylistic range as what pushed him to carve out his own sound within hip-hop. His catalog so far includes projects like "BLACKER.," "A Kid From South Central," "Overnight Celebrity," and "Until Further Notice." His newest single, "Thick & Natural," just dropped, and he'll be performing it live at Miles College's Homecoming Concert on October 3rd, along with an appearance on Fox 26 Houston's The Night Cap. For DJ Stussy, the goal behind the music is bigger than any single release. He says he wants his songs to embody Black culture, good feeling, and genuine faith, giving listeners lyrical expression they can see themselves in. With a catalog he describes as versatile, he hopes fans can find a song that matches wherever they are in life — their mood, their vibe, their story. As his live schedule picks up this fall, DJ Stussy looks to keep expanding that catalog while staying rooted in the gospel and South Central influences that shaped him from the start.
