DON’T BURN BRIDGES: WHY YOUR REPUTATION IS YOUR GREATEST BUSINESS ASSET

By Sienna Atlantis | THIS IZ ATL One thing about business is that you never know when your name is being mentioned in a room you’re not in. And depending on how you’ve conducted yourself, that conversation could either open a door or close one before you even get the opportunity to walk through it. That’s why I’ve always believed that the relationships you build and the way you treat people matter just as much as the work you do. Especially in entertainment, where everybody seems to know somebody. Sometimes one introduction, conversation, or referral can lead to an opportunity you’ve spent years working toward. But what people don’t always realize is that when someone recommends you, they’re also putting their own reputation on the line. Nobody is obligated to give you access to relationships they’ve spent years building. That’s why I believe appreciation, professionalism, and reciprocity are so important. And while I believe in supporting people without expecting anything in return, relationships should never be built solely around what someone can do for you. Another thing I’ve learned is that not every business relationship is going to work out. Sometimes people disagree, partnerships end, and people simply grow in different directions. And that’s okay. But everything doesn’t have to end on bad terms. You can disagree without disrespecting someone. You can walk away from a situation without creating unnecessary conflict. Now, don’t get me wrong. I believe in knowing your worth, establishing boundaries, and protecting your peace. But just because you choose not to cross a bridge again doesn’t mean you have to burn it down. I’ve always believed that real success isn’t just about what you accomplish for yourself. It’s also about the people you help, support, and pour into along the way. Never become so focused on where you’re going that you forget the people who helped you get there. At the end of the day, business is built on relationships, and relationships are built on trust. Success may introduce you to new rooms, but your reputation determines whether you’re welcomed back. And remember, your network may be your net worth, but your character is what gives it value.
