Long before Atlanta's music scene became a global export, Phalando "Mr. Flamboyant" Lawson was already in the mix, helping shape the sound of the city's party culture from the inside. Today he's the CEO of Jlawsonmusicgroup, but his story starts back in 1998, when he ran with a South Side click doing the group thing before launching his own label, then called Faceoff Records.
That early chapter produced something Lawson still points to as a defining moment: a Freaknik theme song that landed in heavy rotation on Atlanta radio and in the city's clubs. For anyone who came up during that era, Freaknik was a cultural touchstone, and having a record embedded in that moment gave Lawson's label its first real foothold in the industry.
More than two decades later, he's still building. Under Jlawsonmusicgroup, Lawson is currently working on new music with Lady Queet, Ebony Camille, and Jackson Langford, alongside multi-platinum producer and artist Johnboy, known for "The Wobble." He's also touring and putting together additional shows in partnership with Di Jelly, part owner of Oomp Records -- a collaboration that keeps him connected to Atlanta's deep bench of label veterans and event promoters.
Lawson, an Atlanta native, credits his faith and his family as his biggest inspirations, grounding a career that's spanned music, business, and even film -- he notes he can also be spotted in a few movies.
Asked what he wants people to take from his work, Lawson keeps it simple: he wants his contributions to Atlanta entertainment remembered. It's a body of work built quietly over 25-plus years, from a Freaknik-era hit to present-day collaborations and live shows, and Lawson is still adding to it.
