Glynisha Langston was just 12 years old when she picked up her first strands of hair to braid, practicing in her mother's living room in Miami Dade County. What started as a child's curiosity has since grown into a career as a master braider, one rooted in a personal story she carries with her to this day. At the heart of Langston's brand is her cousin, Girly, who passed away from sickle cell at 14. Langston recalls that Girly was famously tender-headed and didn't like anyone touching her hair, yet she let a 10-year-old Langston practice on her anyway. That trust, she says, became the foundation for everything that followed, and her brand is dedicated to Girly's memory. After years spent behind the chair building her craft, Langston is now shifting some of her focus outward. She's currently conducting street interviews with up-and-coming entrepreneurs, an effort she describes as a way to use her platform to give back to future leaders rather than keep the spotlight on herself. She's also back in school, though she's keeping the subject under wraps for now, saying she'd rather revisit that chapter of her story once there's more to show for it. Langston has a few other things in the works she can only hint at, including an upcoming TV appearance she can't detail due to an NDA, and a fashion show this fall dedicated to veterans. She's also been connecting with Atlanta restaurants for food-related collaborations. Through it all, Langston says she hopes people walk away understanding that a brand can be built from the ground up, and that genuine gifts and talents can open doors and set someone apart. For her, this season of balancing entrepreneurship, school, and her craft has been a rewarding one, built on the contributions of her past.
