James Scott Jr grew up watching his father keep aquariums throughout the house, and it was his dad who bought him his first tank. That early attempt didn't go well — he lost every fish in it — but instead of giving up, he started researching and asking questions until he figured it out. That persistence became the foundation for what he now runs full-time: Aquatic Wonders, an Atlanta-based aquarium and pond maintenance business.
The business took shape almost by accident. During the pandemic, more people were home and suddenly interested in aquariums, and Scott found himself fielding a wave of same-day service calls while still working a full-time job. Watching potential income slip away while feeling undervalued at work pushed him to make a change. As he describes it, sometimes you have to get uncomfortable before you can get comfortable — and that discomfort opened the door to running Aquatic Wonders, which he says has kept growing since he committed to it full time.
For Scott, the biggest reward isn't a milestone or accolade — it's freedom. Owning his business means he doesn't have to ask permission for time off or miss things like his child's graduation. He calls that freedom his greatest accomplishment.
Today, Aquatic Wonders offers services ranging from installation and routine maintenance to emergency calls, lighting, transport, and saltwater and freshwater system upgrades. Scott says he treats clients like family and tries to bring the same hands-on care his father modeled for him growing up. Looking ahead, he's focused on expanding the brand and bringing on additional aquatic experts to help handle the growing workload.
His outlook is straightforward: keep showing up, keep promoting your work even when support feels scarce, and always aim to be a little better than you were yesterday. For Scott, that mindset — more than any single achievement — is what's kept Aquatic Wonders growing year after year.
