Georgette Young didn't grow up in Atlanta, and she didn't ease into the music industry either. Originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, she moved to the city and landed an internship at Means Street Studios, stepping into a world that was unfamiliar in more ways than one. She was new to the studio system and new to Atlanta itself, surrounded by people who seemed to already know how everything worked.
She adapted quickly, and credits that experience with shaping her work ethic. At Means Street, nothing was handed over — opportunities had to be noticed and claimed before someone else took them. Young says it wasn't about competing with the other interns so much as matching their hunger. During that stretch, she was also balancing motherhood and a full-time 9-to-5 alongside her internship, showing up every day regardless.
That persistence carried her to her current role as Studio Manager at Human Re Sources, the music distribution and label services company founded by J. Erving. In that position, she's currently working with multi-platinum producer Chinoo.xo, whose latest release, "No Jewelry" with Belly Gang Kushington, is part of a steady stream of new music he's putting out. She's also working closely with independent artist Blair, who has new music on the way.
Young's connection to music runs deeper than her job title. She points to her children and her late brother, who passed away in 2016, as her biggest inspirations. Music was something she and her brother bonded over growing up, trading opinions on new releases in a household where, as she describes it, Jamaican culture made music impossible to avoid.
Above all, Young wants her career to serve as an example for other mothers — proof, in her words, that motherhood and ambition don't have to be separate stories, and that the vision doesn't have to disappear, just adjust to include your children along the way.
